Okay, seriously, sometimes I just scan over everyone's LJs to find surveys, which facilitate procrastination. I need a life, I know I do. How many surveys have I done in the past week? Hehehehe.

Class today was... eh. The morning got off to a rocky start- while I was getting ready for class, I somehow knocked some hair product off a shelf, which hit my container of liquid handsoap, which then fell on the floor between my sink and toilet and proceeded to "bleed" everywhere. Not cool. I have everything cleaned up now, but it caused me to swear profusely. And my bathroom smells strongly of Dial soap. But I suppose it could be worse. Aaaanyways. English class flew by. Theo dragged on and on, even though we got out half an hour early. We spent the entire time discussing the article we had to read last night, and that article was just BORING. I had nothing to say about it. Except that it was boring.

Well, anyways. Found out this morning also that ABC is stupid, and they've decided to hold back on the 4th season of Alias until January '05. I'm going to go crazy until then, waiting for my beloved show (and a chance to drool over Michael Vartan for an hour every week) to come back. The season finale is this Sunday... after being pushed back two weeks by the stupid ABC monkeys. They don't seem to like the show much... even though it's pulling some of their best ratings. For next season, the station is pulling in TWO new reality shows. 'Cause it's not like they don't have enough already. Reality shows are crap. They should just call them "semi-unscripted shows"... they don't depict real life in any way. Anyways. I wash my hands of that subject (with dial liquid soap... heh. grrrr). Onward to the survey!

So many of you know, in the past few weeks, my guilty pleasure has been American Idol. Unlike last week, when the best singer got voted off. The whole show is junk, and I've known that all along, even while I was watching avidly. Why is it junk?

Well, for one, it's not realistic. Most successful musical artists don't have to be great at singing all styles of music. In fact, some of them would SUCK if they tried to sing something else (Dave Matthews singing disco? Rosie Thomas singing disco? Uh, eww). Does that mean they are bad singers? Not at all. They have their niche and they are very good within that niche. Rock bands are not asked to rap (though sometimes they do it anyways), and they are not considered horrible if they can't. Country singers are not asked to sing perfect big band songs. In fact, not many branch out. And that's perfectly fine. So why should the American Idol have to do so? Is it because if they can sing, perfectly, big band, disco, country, etc, then they are truly American? What American sings all of those genres equally great? And does that mean that there are no truly wonderful American singers? Not at all.

Secondly, the voting is strongly based off of personality. La Toya London got voted off mostly because throughout the competition, she was quieter, more reserved. At least, that's the impression that I am left with. People seem to vote for Jasmine because she's a sweet girl (and to spite Simon). People get annoyed with Fantasia because her personality is a little... odd, I guess. Does personality matter that much when it comes to singing? What does personality really have to do with vocal talent? Isn't American Idol supposed to find the best singer, not the person with whom you'd like to be best friends? Okay, so personality has something to do with the popularity of singers. Michael Jackson is a helluva weirdo... but there are still some people who really like his music. But everyone else... they're not psychopathic killers, and so people buy their music. Nobody in the final 12 of American Idol are psychopaths, from what we saw of them. Shouldn't that be enough? Actors don't have to be the nicest people in the world (look at Russell Crowe's not-pleasant temperament and his popularity), so why should singers?

This country puts a lot of emphasis on character. It seems like if you have to be voted in to get a position, you have to be not just like-able, but damn near the epitomy of niceness. Not just on American Idol... look wider into the upcoming Presidential election. People are criticizing Kerry because he wasn't nice to his next-door neighbors... by asking them not to talk to them, mostly, or to get off his lawn, or whatever. It's not like he tried to KILL them. Kerry is running to be PRESIDENT, not for the award for best neighbor. There's a difference. It's not like Bush is the perfect character. Bush supporters say that grammar is not the most important issue when choosing for whom to vote (misunderestimate, anyone?)... why should neighborliness? I agree, it's important to be civil and decently pleasant, but you don't have to be coated in sugar.

So that's my (not-so-brief) rant about the not-real American Idol (and character debates in presidential campaigns).

I just finished the reading for tomorrow's potentially oh-so-exciting (NOT) theology class. Inculturation. Woohoo. That class is going to be very boring... the professor seems nice, but he talks slowly and in an unsure way. I understand that he's just fishing for the right words when he hesitates in the middle of a sentence... but man, he's going to bore all of us. Except maybe the girl who sat in front of me. She kept looking around the classroom. It was weird. I'm not quite sure who she was expecting to see, but I wished she had just faced forward.

The english class I have before that should be fun though. There's a whole 9 of us. And I think the teacher is related to my medieval women's lit prof, which is kinda funny. She does a good job of being active and not boring us to death. It's going to be a lot of work, but I'm a nerd and I like english. The assignments don't sound so bad.

The hardest thing is going to be the fact that these are 6 week courses, as opposed to 16 weeks. Four days a week might end up hurting, but there's that 3 day weekend to regroup.

Other than that, I'm still sick. I have a harder-than-usual time focusing on words and I didn't feel exceptionally social in class. Not like I'm an outgoing person to begin with... but I dunno. I just wanted to go home and sleep. Of course, I ended up doing that reading instead of sleeping. And now I think I'm going to get started on the english work. And then MAYBE I'll nap. Maybe I'll go just to bed really early.

Yeah right. I always try to go to sleep early, and it just doesn't work.

Whoa... blogger changed their template. I like it. Ummm... and yes, I realize that unless you HAVE a blogger, you won't be able to really appreciate the changes.

Well, I was afraid I was going to be REALLY bored tonight (I'm at home, and there's nothing to do- what a surprise!), but of course, Tory put a new survey on her livejournal. Soooo... here we go.

And I understand that it seems like I don't have a life, because my blogger is filled with surveys. But I'm addicted to surveys.

I AM DONE WITH FINALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, the question now is, did I pass all of them? With the exception of stats, which sucked big time, I think I did. So now I have two blissful weeks of nothing until summer classes start.

I really wish I had a job... arg. These two weeks might get old, fast. But maybe not. Who knows. But either way, I'm done with this semester. I think I'll celebrate by taking a nap.

Wednesday, May 05, 2004

I would just like to express my joy now that medieval women's lit is OVER!!!!! I just finished the final and as I walked out the door, it was just one of those moments where you want to grin until your cheeks hurt because the torture is over.

Wow, I never knew I disliked that class so much. Actually, the material we covered was pretty interesting. It's just that after a while, Dr Taylor became annoyingly condescending. Oh, and remember that awful paper I wrote? I got it back, and he gave me an 86.5%... which is also what I got on my midterm and the last test. I'm surprised he gave me a B... that paper really was horrific. I'm surprised it even made sense. But whatever. I'll take the B. Hopefully, I did well enough on the final (I feel pretty confident about it, actually... even though I didn't study nearly enough) to keep the AB that I had at midterm.

Tomorrow, at 8 AM, will decide my fate. That's right, the stats final. Things are not looking in my favor, because I don't know if I can even use a calculator that early in the morning. It's not even that early, but I'm just not a morning person. I'm going to try to go to bed early tonight, but that never works. I guess I should get studying now.

I just tried a spinach-artichoke dip recipe. It's disgusting. Too much artichoke. And the recipe calls for mayonnaise, which I've realized that I hate. I even bought the light mayonnaise, and I still can't stand it. So whoops. At least I tried it. Now I know... no more recipes that require an entire CUP of mayo. Ugh.

Now it's back to the studying and the Kentucky Derby stuff. ;-)
